Professional Profile (Research & Scholarship)

Professor Matthew was employed at Massey University in 1984 as a Junior Lecturer in Agronomy and worked there for 35 years, retiring in 2018 as professor. He is a pasture agronomist with a national and international profile, specialising in pasture plant ecophysiology, but with professional versatility. Within New Zealand he was aligned with the forage plant improvement industry with major interests in understanding factors determining pasture shoot populations, perennial ryegrass water use efficiency, Epichloë endophyte impact on ryegrass performance use of metabolic energy budgeting to optimise farm systems output and a collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University on aspects of environmental pollution. His professional contacts have included leading scientists in his field in UK, France, Germany, USA, China, Brazil and Argentina. He has published approximately 100 journal papers, co-authored approximately 10 book chapters, delivered some 50 industry conference papers within New Zealand and 25 international conference papers, and edited a special issue of Agriculture, ‘Forage plant Ecophysiology’. He was chief supervisor to 14 PhD and a number of Masters and Honours students. Professor Matthew delivered the Levy Oration at the 2018 New Zealand Grassland Association conference.

Undergraduate Teaching

Professor Matthew typically contributed to the teaching of 7–10 undergraduate courses each calendar year with positive student feedback and a student-voted Faculty Best Teacher award in 2011. He produced a number of enduring on-line teaching resources for students including ‘Grassview – the form and function of grass’

Screen grabs from teaching multimedia presentation ‘Grassview - the form and function of grass’ as released in 1997 as a CD; now reprogrammed for web delivery (still in use).
